Lotus is a widely planted crop around the world. Here are some useful tips for lotus growing.
On July 8th, Eagle Brother's spraying team was invited to provide spraying service with our multi-rotor agriculture drones for 30 acres of lotus in Hunan Province.

Lotuses are widely planted across China. Farmers can harvest lotus seeds and roots from them. Lotus roots are very common vegetable in China. And seeds are always added while cooking soup in China. It's a traditional Chinese medicine. Summer is a crucial period for lotus growing to maintain them in good condition to fight against pests and diseases. Here are some useful tips for controlling common diseases that would affect lotuses.

    Lotus Brown Blotch Disease
    1. Brown Blotch Disease

Brown blotches are usually seen on lotus leaves. The shallow brown blotches lead to partially withering of the leaves.
Prevention and control: plant lotuses in appropriate density to ensure ventilation and light transmission in the fields; appropriate application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer to improve plant resistance and timely removal of diseased plant residues. In the early stage of the disease, spray with 25% carbendazim 600 times solution or 75% chlorothalonil 1000 times solution.

       Lotus Black Spot Diesease
    2. Black Spot Disease
Black spot disease is deep brown spots affect leaves only. Serious black spot disease causes converge of brown spots and leaf withering too.
Prevention and control: Collect affected leaves together in the field and burn them up in winter before next season of lotus plantation. Remove affected leaves at the early stage of the disease once found in the fields, and remember to apply 70% thiophanate methyl at 1000 times concentration, or 65% zineb at 600 times concentration, or Bordeaux mixture at a proportion of 1:1:160-200. Remember to spray 2 or 3 times with 10 to 15 days’ time interval.

    Lotus Rot Disease
    3. Rot Disease

Rot disease is also named as withering disease and affect underground stems. Serious rot disease leads to overall withering in the fields with symptoms of fire burning appearance.
Prevention and control: Serious affected fields are subject to 2 or 3 years of rotation. Apply 70% methyl thiophanate at concentration of 1000 times, or 75% chlorothalonil at concentration of 800 times to spray on the seeds and covered them for 24 hours with agricultural films. Then plant the seeds after they’re air dried. Also deep plough the fields and apply 150 kg of lime. When lotuses are affected by the disease, mix 0.5 kg of 75% chlorothalonil with 30 kg of dry soil and sprinkle them into the fields at shallow water conditions.

    Lotus Stripe Fungus Disease
    4. Stripe Fungus Disease

The disease affects both leaves and stems, multi-angular shallow brown withering appears on the leaves and dark brown stripe withering appears on the stems.
Prevention and control: choose fungus resistant varieties and control aphids which spread the fungus in the fields. Apply 1.5% phytophthora emulsion at concentration of 1000 times at the early stage of the disease.

    Pest control for lotus
    5. Common Pests
Aphids, big moths, pear green moths, brown moths are common pests that would damage leaves and flower buds. Apply 90% trichlorfon at concentration of 800-1000 times solution, or 40% dimethoate at 2000 times concentration; water maggots feed on juice from lotus roots, stems and leaves and cause leaf withering, apply 60 to 95 kg of lime per acre of lotuses.
